Ceadîr-Lunga

Horses, wine and a leafy town centre

Ceadîr-Lunga is the second town of Gagauzia, in the east of the region, about 35 km from Comrat. It has a pleasant, shady centre with a park and fountain, Soviet-era public buildings and a strong farming hinterland of vineyards, orchards and wheat.

Two things bring visitors: horses and wine. The At-Prolin stud farm on the edge of town breeds trotters and hosts races that are a highlight of the Hederlez spring festival, while local wineries turn the grapes of the Budjak steppe into robust southern reds.

Top things to do: Ceadîr-Lunga

At-Prolin horse stud farm

The farm is known for its Orlov trotters and has stables, paddocks and a racetrack. Visits generally need to be arranged in advance, ideally through a guide; depending on the day you may see training, tour the stables or arrange a ride.

Horse races at Hederlez

Around 6 May, Ceadîr-Lunga’s races are one of the best-known events of the Gagauz spring festival, with trotting, riding displays, music and food stalls. Dates and programme vary each year — check locally.

Town centre and park

Stroll the central park with its fountain, the main street and the market. The town museum covers local history if it is open when you pass.

Local wine

Wineries in and around Ceadîr-Lunga and in nearby Tomai produce reds and whites from the surrounding vineyards. Tastings are by arrangement; see our wine route page.

Ravines and steppe

On the outskirts, deep bushy ravines cut into the plateau — known to geologists for fossil finds — and give an idea of the steppe landscape before the plough.

How to get to Ceadîr-Lunga

  • Marshrutkas link Comrat and Ceadîr-Lunga several times a day in around an hour, and there are direct buses from Chișinău’s Southern Bus Station taking roughly 2.5–3 hours. Check timetables locally.
  • By car it is about 35 km east of Comrat on a secondary road through Avdarma’s turn-off and Tomai, which makes a natural loop.

Insider tips

  • Arrange the stud farm visit ahead — it is a working farm, not a walk-in attraction.
  • Combine Ceadîr-Lunga with Avdarma and Tomai for a full day east of Comrat.
  • For Hederlez, book transport and any accommodation early; the region has very few hotel beds.

Gagauzia is under two hours from Chișinău, but its museums and wineries are scattered across the steppe and village buses are thin. A guided day trip joins the dots and adds the stories.
